Camp Glow 2014
The Peace Corps Nicaragua Camp GLOW Committee is pleased to share with you the success of the second annual Camp GLOW (“Girls Leading Our World”).
The Camp GLOW Committee has been working over the past several months to plan, fund and execute the camp. We wrote an application and invited Peace Corps Volunteers working throughout several regions in Nicaragua to seek out young women in their communities who demonstrated leadership potential and who would benefit from attending the camp. Volunteers’ efforts were a great success and 63 girls between the ages of 12-17 from thirteen different regional departments attended Camp GLOW 2014.
Camp Glow was held in the beautiful setting of Vida Joven in the mountains of the northern department of Jinotega from February 7-10, 2014. We collaborated with 11 facilitators from the organization Plan Nicaragua who held workshops on various topics including self-esteem, gender equality, teen pregnancy, HIV, gender violence and future planning.
In addition to the educational workshops, campers enjoyed various recreational activities at Vida Joven, such as a nature labyrinth, canoeing and a ropes course. There was also free time allotted to sports, field games, arts and crafts and karaoke. On the final evening, we held a candle ceremony to reflect on our experiences and distribute certificates to the campers. After the ceremony, the girls enjoyed a final fiesta with dancing, singing and ice cream.
The girls showed great enthusiasm in the topics covered and were extremely participatory. The girls loved the intimate environment of the sessions and were comfortable expressing their viewpoints with the all-girl setting and exchanged interesting perspectives with one another. On the final day, the girls strategized and outlined ways to transmit the knowledge they had acquired during Camp GLOW to members of their communities.
Camp GLOW provided these girls with a unique opportunity to stretch beyond their comfort zones, make new friends, learn about their potential and self-worth, and enjoy the last weekend of their school vacation.
